Open Tour 2


Camden 2 (15-3)

We came out strong from the start and kept putting pressure on with our D, creating lots of turn overs. After taking half 8-1, we let up a little and they took 2 on the bounce. However, we refocused and closed out the game convincingly.

Reading 2 (15-6)

Starting on D, we decided to try a zone as the wind starting to pick up, however the Reading handlers worked it through with relative ease. We struggled to get our O going and quickly went down 4-0. After a timeout we started to get our game together and got a few on the board either side of half, but were never able to close the gap and Reading closed out the last few points.

Wild Boars (13-12)

We knew they would like to play a long game, however we struggled to shut this down in the first half. We traded through most of the first half before Boars broke to take it 8-6. After half, we decided to bring out a zone to shut down their long game, and this seemed to do the job as we started to get back into the game. The game came down to universe point with us receiving the disc. We stayed calm and walked it in to close out the day with a win and secure 2nd in the pool.

Devon 3 (15-7)

We came out hard in this game and kept the pressure on through out the game. Our D was tight, with a few run through and layout Ds. We made effective use of quick starts throughout the match to run the opposition down and make use of our larger team size. After a tight first half, we took the game away in the second to run away with the game.

Cambridge (15-12)

This was the toughest match of the weekend as tiredness started to set in and caused a few execution errors and simple drops. We came out on D and got the early turn and score and continued to trade for the first few points. Cambridge managed to get the break back and took a couple more just before half. The second half was tightly contested, but we were unable to close the gap.

Cloud City 2 (11-10)

We came out with man D, and managed to get a few turns as they looked to play a long game, with mixed success, as the scores stayed close. We decided to try zone and shut down their long game and began to amount a lead, taking half 8-5. We took the first point after half to take a four point lead, however personal errors started to creep in, with first passes hitting the floor and simple drops. They managed to close the gap and went one point up just before the hooter. Taking a timeout to clear our heads, we came out and scored our O without turning. We decided to go out with zone on universe point and put pressure on them, forcing them to make the long shot which Brendan dealt with twice, before showing our long game to snatch the win.


Well done to everyone this weekend. We had a mix of experience and newbies, and it was hard to know how the weekend would pan out, but everyone played exceptionally well. Thanks to the experienced players who helped to give structure to the offense, which allowed the rookies to slot in and show us what they were capable of, improving throughout the weekend.



Mixed Tour 1 Report (GU1)


Mixed Tour 1 Review

(GU1-SMOG 2) 13-8 Win 

Our first game of the day was against SMOG 2. We knew heading into the match that it would be a very tight and competitive game and we expected nothing less. GU had a rocky start to the match after conceding a few points, although we made sure that our heads did not drop and we stayed focussed on the task ahead and not on the deficit. After scoring a few points we called a timeout, brining the team together and focusing on some common goals that will help us comeback to win the game. Soon after we tied the game up. We had shaken off all of the cobwebs and were prepared to finish the game on top. We really started to regain our confidence and it started to show, as we continued to punch in goals. The hooter blared, as we finished the point and the game at 13-8. 

(GU1-PAF) 15-5 Win 

SMOG had showed us in the previous game that we had to give 100% from start to finish if we wanted to have a good shot at winning, and that is exactly what we did. PAF were the 2nd seeds in our pool, so we expected a tough game, and we got that. We came out of the blocks slowly again and went 3-2 down before we got our heads in to the game, with the help of a couple of big D plays and put in 10 unanswered points. PAF got a couple of late scores, but we punched in our 15th goal to end the game. It was a good and well-spirited game from both sides that helped GU gain confidence going into our third and final game of the day. 

(GU1-STORM) 12-4 Win 

We headed out with a strong ambition to win knowing that we would enjoy our night much more if we could win this last game and complete the clean sweep of 3-0. We knew Storm would come out with the same fire that we did, so we gave everything we had. GU took a good start and smashed some points to begin the game, which was soon followed by Storm. We gradually increased the lead as time went on. We were feeling fatigued and tired although our side-line really helped to push and motivate us to finish the last game in style. 

(GU1-HERD 2) 10-7 Win 

After a well-rested night, we started the day with a shot at top 20 with a cross over against Herd 2. There were a few familiar faces on both sides, but this did not stop it being a hard fought contest. Both teams knew that they could take the game, that it was there’s to be won, although there could only be one winner. We hammeredin the first goal to get the game started, although any points we scored were soon mirrored by Herd. After an intense few points, we call a timeout, to regroup, recharge and remind each other that we are going to win this game as a team! This was the game we needed our huge sideline most and they certainly showed up. The game continued as each team gasped for the win. We had the lead when the buzzer went off. 9-7 up, knowing that we were so close to victory but if we don’t give all we have, the game could still slip out of our grasp. After a very intense and heart racing last point we finish the game 10-7. 

(GU1- Cosmic mantees) 12-8 Win 

We were relieved after winning the last match, although we wanted to go all the way. There were only two teams standing in the way of that happening. The cosmic manatees started strong, scoring a few points to get us on our toes, although we pounced back quickly. They liked to put a strong zone on us which we had to soon adjust to, although it wasn’t anything that we hadn’t dealt with before. We started to strike through the zones and smash some more points onto the scoreboard. They soon followed us until the hooter sounded again. We had a three-point lead that we were determined to make it four to win the game and go 5-0. We took our time and dealt with the zone, the sideline cheering us on assisting us on the final point. We score to finish the game 12-8, Elliott with the layout clap catch to secure the victory.

(GU1-BIRMINGHAM) 15-10 Loss 

We were tired, but we knew how important the last game was. Birmingham started strong and there athleticism quickly showed as we tried to follow along. They scored the first few points as we soon copied. They were determined to win the last game, as were we, we just could not find enough in the tank to push us into the lead. The hooter goes for the last time, and we were down by four. Knowing that we would have to get 5 consecutive goals to win, we were unable to convert the offense and Birmingham finished the last point strong to get the 15-10 victory.

We get from these games what we put in. 5 wins is a good start. How much further do we want to go? 

Special mentions go to Nick for being kindly presented MVP by two other teams. However across the weekend players put the team on their back and really set about putting their stamp on the game. This includes Tom, Tiger and Kate. 

I am Looking forward to seeing how some new club players fit into the team at tour 2.


Regionals Round Up


South East Open Regionals happened last weekend, Captain Sam Bonsor reports on the results:

The GU team that took the field at Regionals in Reading saw a significant amount of change from the team that made the trip down to Cardiff the previous week; having been seeded fourth and placed in a very tough group there was little time for introductions.

The first game of the day was against a Reading team fresh off an 8 th place finish at OT3, and 5 th place in the overall tour standings. GU opened the game up on D and the experienced Reading team did not take long to put in the first point. Undeterred Guildford came out on the ensuing O point calmly moved the disc upfield and punched it in for an easy no-turnover score. The rest of the game would not prove so easy, with a combination of drops and poor decision making handing Reading the disc regularly. The Guildford defence did not give up easily however and made Reading work for each and every score. Final score 13-1 Reading.

Next up GU took on top seed Brighton City; once again the team showed promise throughout the game, moving the disc well for periods of time until an errant throw or drop would halt the momentum. Once the disc was turned over City did not have as much trouble with the Guildford D as Reading did, using their superior athleticism and throwing skills to slice through for easy scores.

Despite the relative ease of many of Brighton’s scores the game was a good showing for Guildford, matching the score from the previous game against Reading, final score 13-1 Brighton.

The final pool game was against Brighton Legends, and knowing that they had beaten Reading a win could have guaranteed Guildford a spot at nationals via a three way tie. Legends looked to quell any notions of victory early and used a strong deep game to seize opportunities handed to them to jump out to a large 7-2 lead at half. The second half was anything but one way traffic, GU pulling out all the stops, even scoring a break or two! In the end the comeback fell short but a strong second half showing provided hope that a win in the crossover and a rematch of one of the pool games in the game to go. Final score 12-6?

The 4v5 crossover to get into the game to go was against Hampshire 1, who had held seed with two victories in their pool earlier in the day. Special mention goes out to Ben Wainhouse for showing up before this game and instantly making his presence felt by throwing a big OI forehand huck on the first point for a score. Despite the roster boost the advantage of having played one fewer game showed for Hampshire at the start of the game as they came out to a strong 4-1 lead after starting the game on D. Guildford were not phased however, and put in several breaks on the back of a stifling defence that shut down Hampshire’s downfield cutters and forced bad throws, bringing the game back on serve and taking half 7-6. The second half once again showed which team had played one game fewer with Hampshire coming out and seizing momentum that they never handed back.

With the game level at 8-8 when the whistle sounded Hampshire put in their O point then hounded the Guildford O line, finally putting in the break to finish the game 10-8 and send them into the game to go.

The final game proved to be a test of attrition, with one player already side-lined from the start we faced a tough battle against a Reading 2 nd team hungry to not go winless for the day. From starting the game one player down, several more were forced out of the game through injury or fatigue during the game, with Jack Chapman coming on for the injured Dan White only to leave the pitch and not return on the same point! While this game was certainly not the prettiest of the game it was certainly the grittiest performance of the day for Guildford. Who managed to keep their heads after Reading started to mount a comeback from about 7-3 down to come within one point just before the cap finally went off. In the end it was an accomplished performance in the cap scoring with relative ease to put the game to bed and end the day on a winning note.



Mixed Tour 2 – Captains Report (GU1)


Mixed tour 2 happened in Manchester last weekend. Here’s the low-down on GU1 from captain Tugs.

Game 1: Manchester (won 13-8?)

As at tour 1, we started the day determined to come out firing and prove that we deserved our top-16 seeding. Our offence wasn’t perfect, but aggressive defence had Manchester taking bail-out long throws from the off and we were able to take an early lead. Our opponents took time at half to compose themselves and came back much improved, making the end of the game a bit of an arm-wrestle, but personal errors kept them from making up the points in time and we opened the tournament with a well-earned win!

Game 2: Hex (lost 11-7?)

Hex, a GB under-23s team with a heavy Brighton feel, came out with a strong long game that frustrated our defence and prevented us from carving out a decent lead. The two teams were neck and neck for much of the match, but our opponents were able to edge ahead when we made errors, while our offence wasn’t clinical enough to punish them when we gained a block. Both teams mixed up their tactics with some success, and forcing Hex to play through their girls did earn us a few cheap turnovers, but for me this felt like a game that slipped away from us as we were not able to step up a gear when we really needed to.

Game 3: Glasgow (lost 9-7?)

This was a strange match, in that neither team really played their best ultimate and as a result it felt like a bit of a stalemate. The first two points seemed to last forever as tough defence stifled fairly uninspired offence, and it was a shame to squander an opportunity to rack up a big score against a quality side that had very much lost their mojo. In particular, it seemed that we lost a lot of confidence with the disc- looking off open forward passes and hesitating on reset plays throughout. The result, though, was probably fair and the athleticism showed by key players on the Glasgow team gave us a taste of what we’ll be up against if and when we wrestle our way into the top 12.

Game 4: ABH (lost 8-7)

The first game on Sunday morning is usually the most important game of the weekend, as a lower seeded team that has had a good Saturday gets an opportunity to knock off a higher team that has suffered some hard losses. It’s therefore crucial to set the tone early, and just as we took the game to Meeple last tour, ABH were hungry for a win against us. They employed a high-risk, huck-and-D style which resulted in a very scrappy game, but again our offence wasn’t clinical enough to punish their high turnover rate and we fell behind early on. As we started to battle our way back in, the game descended into a bit of a call-fest and it isn’t really surprising that the sudden death goal only just took the match to half. It was disappointing to have started poorly in this game, as I believe we showed at the end that we were capable of much better ultimate than ABH, but simply dug ourselves too big a hole to get out of.

Game 5: Bristol (won 15-8)

Fortunately, having ended the previous game showing glimmers of the team we know we can be, we were straight on against Bristol and we took our our frustration on them in style. Our defence was excellent, and we were far more confident on offence, moving the disc well and setting up some easy goals. Bristol kept coming, aiming to play a fast, running style of offence but we went step for step with them and came down with a lot of big blocks in the air. Towards the end we perhaps got a little cocky with our throws and gave the disc away a bit cheaply, but we worked hard to get it back and were just about able to take the game to 15.

Game 6: Birmingham (lost 11-8?)

We finished the weekend with another scrappy game in the cold and wet, with several dropped passes by both sides early on. A little more willing to risk the long pass than us, Birmingham took a slight lead before switching to a suffocating zone defence, slowing the game to a crawl as we sought to pick our way through. We did eventually work it out and pulled back a couple of cheap points by mixing up our own defence, but this was another match that just seemed to run away from us a couple of points at a time, and Birmingham were able to close out the game with a fairly comfortable lead.


While it is a tough choice as always, ladies’ MVP for the weekend goes to Lauren for fantastic defensive work and some massive plays in the air. On a blustery weekend where a lot of throws bounced a bit she was always a safe pair of hands, although I feel Lilja also deserves a special mention for a couple of truly outrageous grabs on poor passes.

Despite missing what turned out to be our best game of the weekend, I think Alley Cat is most deserving of the mens’ MVP award for playing with a consistency that many of us lacked. His all-round performance and work rate in tough games stands out to me as a highlight of the tournament.

Overall, it was something of a frustrating weekend for GU1, marked by some inconsistent play and a struggle to hit our stride at crucial moments. Our defence was generally very good, but a lot of hard-earned blocks went unrewarded as our offence stuttered in places. That said, when things did click the team looked pretty unstoppable and we did maintain a positive attitude that kept us working even in the toughest games. We have three weeks to recover before MT3, where I hope we’ll get another go at some of the teams we could have done better against first time round.


Mixed Tour 1 – Captains Report (GU1)


The first competitive event of the season was last weekend in Cardiff. GU1 captain Simon “Tugs” Yorath gaves us a run down of the how his team did.

(TL;DR? Winning. Lots.)

Game 1: Sheffield Steal (won 15-3)

Determined to start our day well, we threw everything at Steal from the start and it quickly became clear that it was more than they could take. Our defence left them with little option but to take on risky long throws, which we came down with more often than not, and our long-practised offence cut them to ribbons. At half I asked the team to stay focussed and avoid complacency- worried that a relatively easy start could hurt us later in the tournament- and sure enough we killed off the game with time to spare.

Game 2: YCU (won 14-4)

This game felt a lot closer than the scoreline suggests, every point being tightly contested as York ran hard and really pushed us. Ultimately, though, our defence was the difference- the GU ladies in particular completely shutting down their marks and forcing scrappy offence from our opponents. We didn’t take the game to 15, but I do think we made a pretty good team look very ordinary and built some real momentum to carry into the final pool match.

Game 3: JR2 (won 10-7)

Knowing JR could be a tough team with momentum behind them, we came out all guns blazing and took an early lead. While we guys did our best to stifle their long game, the girls pushed their marks deep, confident that JR wouldn’t want to huck to their ladies. Despite success on the scoreboard, I feel we over-thought their frustrating style of play a bit and lost focus, which affected our offence and let JR back into the game. There were some long, scrappy points in the middle of the game and a couple of hotly contested calls, but I do feel a late comeback attempt flattered JR a bit as we did actually hold a three to four point lead for most of the match.

Game 4: Meeple (won 14-8)

Having topped our pool but not actually gained any seeding as yet, we knew the quarter was a pivotal game for the weekend. That being the case, we were up early for a long warm-up so we could start the game well as we had all the previous day. By contrast, Meeple barely had seven players by the hooter so we were determined to take a big lead before they woke up. Sure enough, we played our best ultimate of the weekend, every player bringing slick, easy offence and tight, physical defence that left our opponents looking pretty shell-shocked. As expected, Meeple picked up their game four or five points in but we shifted up a gear to match them, closing out the game with ruthless efficiency.

Despite benefiting from an early advantage, I believe we were the better team throughout this game, and we thoroughly deserved the win!

Game 5: Flyght Club (won 13-6?)

Flyght Club are a team that practices their zone defence relentlessly, and they rely heavily on it to win them games. It turned out that really hurt them against us, as they persisted with it long after we proved we could beat it with ease.

They really didn’t get into the game until they switched to man at the very end, but despite pulling back a couple of points against us it was far too late by then. We weren’t perfect in this game, and once again our excellent defence covered some unforced errors, but it was satisfying to prove so conclusively that the Meeple game wasn’t just a lucky break.

Game 6: Sublumni (lost 11-8)

Having finished the previous game a bit sluggishly, we missed our usual opportunity to start this game strongly and Sublumni- an all-round better team than we had played for the rest of the weekend- punished us for it. They took the early lead that we had made such good use of in earlier matches, and when we fought our way back into the game

Sublumni’s offence was good enough to keep them ahead. While it was disappointing to finish on a loss, our play in the second half was back where it should be, and I look forward to having another crack at them next time!


While all the ladies were fantastic on both sides of the disc, I feel that Laura is most deserving of the MVP award. She was the starting point for a lot of great plays throughout the weekend and her smart cutting dug us out of several tough situations. Her control of play in the Flyght Club game in particular stands out as a highlight of the weekend.

Among the guys, too, I believe we showed great depth as a squad, but I think Tiger stands out as MVP for the weekend for a great all-round performance. He was dominant in the Meeple game, terrorizing his mark all over the field and throwing some perfect long passes.

I’d also like to add a special mention for our team rookie, Genny, who visibly grew as a player in every game and made some great plays throughout the weekend.


All in all, it was a great weekend for GU1, and hopefully a springboard for a great season. There were outstanding performances across the team, and it’s been a very long time since I enjoyed a tour event so much! Not only did we win a lot of games, but we played some fantastic ultimate in the process. Bring on Tour 2!
